Lancang-Mekong Dams

China's plan to build eight large dams on the upper reaches of the Mekong in Yunnan Provine, which is known as "Lancang" in China, will change the river's natural flood-drought cycle and block the transportation of sediment. These environmental changes will affect the livelihoods of millions of people living downstream in Burmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam. Despite these serious potential impacts, construction of these dams has proceeded without consultation with China's downstream neighbours, and without any real assessment of the likely impacts to the river and its people.
