Govt protects Vientiane from flooding

The government will take all measures necessary to prevent Vientiane 's city centre from being flooded by the rising Mekong River , the Standing Deputy Prime Minister announced yesterday.

The government has appointed Mr Somsavat Lengsavad as the general supervisor of a group of officials tasked with protecting Vientiane from flooding. Party Secretary, Mr Sombath Yialeieher, and Vientiane Vice-Mayor, Mr Somvandy Nathavong, are second in command of the important work.

The Mekong has risen dramatically since early this month, already flooding some low-lying areas.

Mr Somsavat yesterday met with flood prevention officials at the Vientiane Administration Office to offer advice on securing Vientiane against the flood risk.

He directed officials to protect lives, property and security in the capital.

One of the major challenges for officials is to mobilise labour and funds to complete the construction of a flood prevention island along the Mekong river bank. The island must have the capacity to withstand a water level of 14.45 metres. Forecasters have predicted continual rainfall could raise the river to this height on August 16.

The meeting agreed to station technical officials to supervise the erection of the sandbag island and send military officers to critical areas. The meeting also agreed to limit the number of people allowed to watch this process, as they may impede officials and volunteers.

The public health sector has been mobilised to supply doctors and medical supplies to people in flood affected areas. The Water Supply Enterprise is urged make preparations to deliver clean water to Vientiane should the capital be flooded.

The meeting also agreed to allow trade officials to inspect and control the rising prices of goods in the capital.

According to a report from Vientiane Administration Office, a number of individuals, public and private organisations have raised funds for flood prevention and to help victims.

An official from the Ministry of Finance, Xayphone Thammavong, said more than 1.2 billion kip had been donated.

Vientiane authorities welcome additional donations from local and foreign individuals, companies and organisations.
