Riverine Forest: Seasonally flooded forest grows along both sides of the Salween River during the dry season when the water level is low. During the rainy season, the vegetation serves as food for the river fauna and spawning grounds for migratory fish. The Salween is rich with many fish species, which are the main source of food for local people.

This old Karen man living on the Thai side of the Salween River carries the harvest from his riverbank vegetable garden to feed his family. He will lose his agricultural land if the Dagwin dam on the Thai-Burma border is built, because this area will be flooded.

The value of complex ecosystems of the Salween River and the surrounding forests are costs that have never been counted by those who have planned the Salween dam projects.

Impact of Development Projects: In 1996, as a result of increased military presence in the Tenasserim Division, due to the Thai-Burma gas pipeline project, an enormous number of people have become internally displaced. How can we make sure that this will not continue happening with the proposed Salween dam projects?
